Sewer snakes, roto rooters, and drain snakes are the same. Sewer snakes come in all shapes and sized from sink drain snakes as small as a quarter inch in diameter to one inch diameter snakes designed to cut through tree roots. Sewer snakes are are made of high tension tempered spring steel coiled into a long cable. Some snakes have a high tension cable running through the center for added strength and rigidity. Some units are manually operated, but 99.9% of sewer rooter service requires a motorized unit to propel the snake cable and to cut through the clogs in the drain line. Motorized sewer snakes consist of a cable, drum, and motor assembly. The motor rotates the cable which gives the sewer snake its rotating motion that allows the snake cable and attachments to cut through clogs.
No sewer snake is complete without some kind of attachment. Each snake cable attachment is designed for different kind sewer drain cleaning. Some tips are designed to grab and cut through roots (root cutting tips). Other sewer snake tips are designed to drill into the clog so that the foreign object can be removed (coiled tips), and yet another type of tip is used to bore through clogs (spade tip).
Sewer snakes most commonly required are medium duty 3/8 inch coiled cable ranging from 25 feet to 75 feet. This sized of drain snake is designed to cut through tough clogs due to small roots, foreign objects, hair, grease, grime and build up. This size of drain snake has interchangeable drain cleaning tips to attack different types of clogs.
The largest sewer snakes are one inch in diameter and come in sections so that the snake can reach in excess of 100 feet into a sewer drain to reach tough clogs and roots. This kind of sewer snake comes with the same type of attachments but the most commonly used attachments are the root cutters and spades. This large root cutter sewer snake is extremely heavy duty so it can cut through the toughest roots. Cutting roots with a root cutter of this size can save the home owner thousands of dollars that would otherwise have to be spent on digging up and replacing the pipe.
Toilet drain snakes are small, usually 3/8 inch diameter and about four feet long. Toilet snakes are manually operated and designed to clean out soft clogs in the toilet p-trap only. Toilet drain snakes more often than not are not effective as toilet clogs are usually further down the sewer drain line.
Shower drain snakes are thin, 1/4 in diameter and range from 10 feet long to 30 feet long. Shower drain clogs are often due to hair build up in the drain and can be in the p-trap or further down the drain line. Shower drain snakes are also used on sink drains.
